Review: Behind Your Eyes by Susannah Woods (3 stars, historical)
Full Description: Amazon
Rating: 3 out of 5
Thoughts After Reading:
"Anne Stafford had never been a spirited girl. Indeed, she was agreeable, loyal, and obedient. In short: a spaniel. She had, on occasion in her youth, tried to be independent; and failed miserably."
After such an introduction to the heroine, I knew I needed to try out the book :). It It followed somewhat along the lines of a "marriage of convenience" plot. Or, more accurately, it consisted of an arranged engagement that led to a marriage. I found my feelings on the book to be somewhat mixed.
Behind Your Eyes is the debut novel of the author (I believe it was independently published as well), and that becomes fairly apparent throughout the novel. There were a few modern terms that were likely used incorrectly, although the mistakes were not frequent. More distracting was the placement of several words in all caps, as well as stilted dialogue in places. The latter condition resulted in a only somewhat satisfying conclusion. I was also a bit annoyed with the all-too-frequent device of the heroine mistakenly seeing the hero with a mistress. Despite all that, though, the storyline moved along well - I was pleasantly surprised with how well parts of the novel flowed. It also contained a nice mixture of adventure and romance, with much of the book taking place in the Caribbean.
The ebook is currently listed for free on Amazon (its regular price is only $0.99), so give it a try when you don't have anything else to read.
